Boxing News: Manny Pacquiao to defeat Miguel Cotto

We’re talking about two of the biggest fighters of our time. Two who are best in their respective classes are finally meeting up to spell the difference between each other. It’s the deadly Manny Pacquiao who is on a great run right now facing Miguel Cotto who has a recent statistics that suggest he’s very confident about this fight, and lax too.

Miguel Cotto

Miguel Cotto may end up hurting himself by challenging Manny Pacquiao

Many people are wondering, how come Miguel Cotto is willing to face the Pacman from the Philippines. He (Pacquiao) looks to be in excellent fighting form right now, and his condition has been above the usual for weeks now, even prior the fight. Pacquiao really worked and practices hard, after neglecting boxing practices for bits of fame early on in his training campaigning for Miguel Cotto whilst Cotto has been practicing for weeks already that time.

It truly doesn’t matter if Manny Pacquiao practiced a month behind Cotto as he looks stronger than ever, and looks promising to provide yet another even more perfect performance inside the ring than what he did to Oscar and Ricky Hatton in the past.

Early speculations about a Mayweather Pacquiao in 2010

Pacquiao is indeed growing a little bit older, but that shouldn’t hinder him from excelling against his present opponent, I think, this is Pacquiao’s golden age, and he can still knock out a few boxers after Miguel Cotto, all depending on the result of this match. We could even see a Mayweather vs Pacquiao somewhere next year, but that’s not our concern right now.

We will never know if Manny Pacquiao will knock him out until we see it.

For all I care about now, is that Manny Pacquiao looks very deadly and that he will be one hard stone to put to pieces by Miguel Cotto. It could be the other way around, but we’ll never know until the twelve rounds run down or the clock stops due to someones knock out.

Underdog role no concern for Cotto against Pacquiao

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Miguel Cotto has no qualms about being listed as the bookmakers' underdog for his WBO welterweight title defense against Filipino Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas next week.

The Puerto Rican, who has an enviable career record of 34-1 featuring 27 knockouts, is confident his power and meticulous preparation will trump Pacquiao's speed when the fighters clash on November 14.

"I don't know anything about the betting business," Cotto said on a conference call from his training camp in Las Vegas on Thursday. "I am just here to try to bring my best every day in the gym.

"With all the work I make in my training camp, I am going to the fight to win money.

"I am here for myself, not for any kind of bet.

"I am prepared for anything Manny can bring to this fight. He has a lot of things besides his speed and I am prepared for all he can show me at this time."

Pacquiao, (49-3-2, 37 KOs), is widely viewed as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world but Cotto believes the Filipino southpaw has picked the wrong opponent for his first bout in the welterweight division.

"Manny comes from a lower weight division and if he thinks he is going to have the same power as Miguel Cotto, he is thinking pretty wrong," the Puerto Rican said.

"He has picked the wrong moment and the wrong fighter. If he thinks he is going to win against Miguel Cotto, he is pretty wrong."

RENOWNED SPEED

Cotto, who retained his WBO title with a gruelling split decision win over Ghana's Joshua Clottey in June, was confident he would be able to cope with Pacquiao's renowned speed.

"We know he has speed and style and that is why you prepare yourself to beat him," he said. "You will find out on the 14th how I am going to deal with his speed and it is not going to be the factor that everyone thinks it is."

Pacquiao cemented his status as the sport's premier fighter with a stunning second round knockout of Britain's Ricky Hatton in May to claim the IBO light welterweight crown.

Since then, he and his trainer Freddie Roach have frequently discussed the possibility of a lucrative bout with undefeated American welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr, leaving many fans to regard the Cotto fight as a formality.

Cotto, however, was unfazed by suggestions he was being underappreciated by the Pacquiao camp. Continued...

Pacquiao graces Time cover

By Dino Maragay
Photo is loading...
Manny Pacquiao is the 10th professional boxer to grace the cover of Time — and only the 2nd non-heavyweight fighter to do so.

MANILA, Philippines – Boxing greats Joe Louis, Max Schmeling, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Frazier, Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali.

And now Manny Pacquiao.

The Filipino ring icon is the latest fighter to make it to the list of professional boxers to be featured in the cover of well-respected magazine Time — and only the second non-heavyweight fighter to do so.

This also makes Pacquiao the second Filipino to grace Time’s cover after former President and democracy icon Corazon Aquino, who was named the magazine’s "Woman of the Year" in 1986.

Apart from heavyweights Louis, Schmeling, Frazier, Ali and middleweight Robinson, other boxers who had made it to the magazine’s cover include heavyweights Jack Dempsey, Primo Carnerra, Gene Tunney and the controversial Mike Tyson.

In its latest Asia edition issue, Time pays homage to the General Santos City-based southpaw in a story titled “The Meaning of Manny,” which branded the Filipino spitfire as “the latest savior of boxing.”

The story delves into Pacquiao’s stature as the Philippines’ favorite son, his humble beginnings, recent ring accomplishments, among others.

The same magazine previously included Pacquiao in its list of 100 most influential people in the world, with former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis providing a brief write-up on him.

Pacquiao is set to collide with Puerto Rican bomber Miguel Cotto for a record seventh world title in as many weight classes. The fight, dubbed “Firepower,” is scheduled on Nov. 14 (Nov. 15 in Manila) at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Pacquiao-Cotto bout a 50-50 affair, says Rourke

HOLLYWOOD – Mickey Rourke has been a disciple of trainer par excellence Freddie Roach and is known to be chummy with boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

But when asked of his thoughts about Pacquiao’s 12-round title fight against Miguel Cotto for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt, the American actor and Academy award nominee said things are going to be even.

“It’s 50-50," Rourke shot back when pressed on who he favored to win the bout.

A one-time boxer in the early 90s who had no less than Roach for trainer, Rourke came over at the Wild Card gym here coinciding with the two-hour long media workout of the 30-year old Pacquiao.

The 57-year old Rourke, whose portrayal of Randy “The Ram" Robinson in the 2008 movie “The Wrestler" earned him an Oscar Best Actor nomination, shook hands and had a pleasant conversation with Roach, and later on, had a photo op with Pacquiao while the pound-for-pound king was in training.

But he appeared less gracious when his thoughts about the WBO championship fight were raised.

Rourke said Pacquiao beating Cotto is not as easy as learning A-B-C.

“I don’t think Cotto would be a walk in the park," said the veteran actor. “He’s gonna be strong. Cotto is the bigger fighter and a very good fighter."

However, one thing going for Manny, according to him, is the Filipino superstar’s vaunted speed.

“Speed would be able to offset Cotto’s power. Speed is more important than power. Manny has got to stay away from Cotto’s range since he (Cotto) can bang with both hands," Rourke said.

Rourke knows where he’s speaking from.

After briefly staying away from acting in 1991, Rourke relived his love for the sport of prizefighting by turning pro under Roach’s watchful eyes.

He was undefeated in eight fights with two of them ending up in draw.

“I would have lost if I haven’t had Freddie, coz my training habit wasn’t that good," he said of his short-lived boxing career.

Rourke would quit boxing soon after, giving to Roach all his equipment that can still be found now at the Wild Card gym.

“He’s my best friend. I wouldn’t be here now (Wild Card gym). He’s the one who brought me here," said Roach in acknowledging all the help Rourke did while the three-time Trainer of the Year was still starting off with his famous sweatshop at Vine St.

Given the chance, Rourke said he’s more than willing to accept a role should a Hollywood movie on Pacquiao be made.

And he already had an idea on who is he going to play.

“I would do the Freddie roach story but I would have to wait 20 years from now," he said, teasing Roach as being too old for him to play. – GMANews.TV

Pacquiao Must Do Huge PPV Numbers To Deal With Mayweather

By Frank Lotierzo

As the anticipation for Pacquiao-Cotto begins to escalate, it's hard not to think about the fight that's gotta happen but isn't a given to happen if Pacquiao wins, that being of course Pacquiao-Mayweather. I'm not selling Cotto short and a win by Miguel shouldn't be considered an upset, despite him being a 3-1 underdog. But when considering Pacquiao has the style advantage and is the bigger star, it's hard to envision Cotto being awarded the decision even if he clearly earns it. In order for Cotto to garner a decision verdict over Pacquiao he'll have too practically beat him almost beyond recognition. And the reason for that is because there's so much money riding on a potential Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

Everybody wants to see Pacquiao and Mayweather fight, even quasi boxing fans care about it and want to see it. But that doesn't mean it will happen. Mayweather hasn't really shown an interest in the fight and acts as though he doesn't care or need for the fight to take place. Floyd knows that he's gotten over by being a fighter with a manufactured undefeated record. In the process he's fooled some sharp boxing observers and fans into believing that he's a greater fighter than he is. And he's counting on as time goes by that being undefeated will enhance his legacy. Which it no doubt will to those who want to live in their perfect world and don't fully understand how to read a fighters record.

If Pacquiao beats Cotto the pressure will be on Mayweather to fight him. However, that won't be enough for the fight to be realized unless Mayweather can somehow hoard most of the money.

Last week while training for his upcoming fight with Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao was asked what he thought his chances were of fighting Mayweather and said, "Fans shouldn't hold their breath. I don't think it's going to happen. I'm sure he doesn't want to fight.

"Boxing for him is like a business," Pacquiao said. "He doesn't care about the people around him watching. He doesn't care if the fight is boring, as long as the fight is finished and he gets (plenty of) money....I want people to be happy. You have a big responsibility as a boxer."

Pacquiao's words are right on the mark. It's hard not to like and root for Pacquiao. Other than some of his fans being over the top and believing he can walk on water, the guy is a real fighter and is definitely one of the greats. It's funny that Pacquiao - who's the smaller fighter and has a better resume and will go down a greater fighter than Mayweather historically, wants the fight more. And I'm not convinced it's all about money on his part. In reality Manny doesn't have to continue to fight bigger fighters, especially if he beats Cotto. The burden of proof as to their greatness rest moreso on Mayweather's shoulders.

I don't believe Mayweather actually fears fighting Pacquiao, and it's my belief that if the fight does actually happen, Mayweather has the perfect style to beat Pacquiao. But Floyd is more about the money and as it's been said here before it'll be hard to get Mayweather to agree to a 50-50 purse split with Pacquiao. And there's no way Bob Arum would let Manny ever agree to fight Floyd for less than a 50-50 purse split.

Arum and Pacquiao face a huge task in dealing with Mayweather at the negioating table if Manny wins on November 14th. Based on Mayweather's one-sided decision over Juan Manuel Marquez seven weeks ago, he's convinced he's the biggest star in boxing. And here's why. Pacquiao-Marquez II did 405,000 pay-per-view buys, Mayweather-Marquez did one million. Pacquiao-Hatton did 850,000 pay-per-view buys and Mayweather-Hatton did 920,000. Granted, the circumstances surrounding those fights were a lot different and Pacquiao, based on his showing in his last fight versus Ricky Hatton is a much bigger star now then he was six months ago. But does anyone with a pulse think that means anything to Mayweather? Of course it doesn't!

The biggest fight this year to date was Mayweather-Marquez. However, it's inescapable that Pacquiao-Cotto is the more legitimate fight. Manny and Miguel are closer in size than Mayweather and Marquez were. And Marquez was 36 whereas Pacquiao is 30 and Cotto is 29. The debate as to which is the more legitimate and anticipated fight doesn't exist; it's Pacquiao-Cotto.

That's why it's imperative that Pacquiao-Cotto do more pay-per-view buys than the one million that Mayweather-Marquez did. As of this writing Mayweather can support his claim as being the active pay-per-view king of boxing because the numbers support him. Obviously the numbers don't tell the whole story and it would be difficult for Arum to argue against Mayweather being at least an equal draw to Pacquiao.

If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight Floyd Mayweather as much as he professes to he better beat Miguel Cotto and hope that the fight does somewhere close to 1.5 million buys. And if that's how it unfolds then Pacquiao will have the leverage over Mayweather along with the boxing public behind him. Sure, Mayweather will counter with the fact that he's undefeated, but that doesn't interest boxing fans like it used to. They've smartened up and view Pacquiao as the more willing fighter who's tested himself against live bodies who in some cases were legitimately a little bigger than him.

If Cotto happens to beat Pacquiao, Mayweather holds all the cards and will say he would've beaten Pacquiao with ease. The only way Mayweather is in a predicament is if Pacquiao looks impressive beating Cotto and Mosley handles Berto. Even at that, Mayweather has the choice as to whether he fights an almost 40 year old welterweight or a fighter who weighed 20 pounds less than he did when they made their pro debut.

Either way it's remarkable how well Mayweather's positioned himself to retire undefeated.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Predictions from the ProBoxing-Fans.com Staff

With the huge Pacquiao vs. Cotto fight now just over a week away, it’s time for the staff to chime in with their predictions. We polled our writers to see who they thought would win the big match, and how they saw it playing out. Take a look at all of our staff predictions for the upcoming mega-fight.

Pro Boxing Fans Staff Pacquiao vs. Cotto Picks

Ben Weisman (Pro Boxing Fans): You can throw me in the camp that believes Pacquiao’s last two fights were way overblown and the folkloric status they attained wasn’t even close to being warranted. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to take anything away from Pacquiao. He’s a great fighter with tremendous skills and lightning quick speed. But you can’t help but question the merits of his recent opposition as they were either weight drained (De La Hoya) or shells of what they once were (Both De La Hoya and Hatton). The fact is Cotto will be Manny’s first fight above 130 pounds against a top fighter in his prime.

I see the fight unfolding with a relatively uneventful first round. Pacquiao will be testing Cotto’s strength and Cotto will be testing Pacquiao’s speed. After the early feeling out period I think you’ll see Pacquiao start to hit his rhythm a bit, jumping in, throwing a combination and then jumping out. Cotto should be able weather the storm, all the while continuing to stalk Manny, trapping him in the corner for short periods of time and landing a couple good shots to Manny’s oft-available body. Cotto is a tremendous body puncher and I like these body punches to start taking their toll around the 8th round.

Look for Manny to have a small lead in the fight heading into the 9th round but at that point Cotto is starting to land with more frequency and Pacquiao is starting to tire. Pacquiao will struggle in the 10th round and in the 11th will succumb to the unrelenting pressure from the bigger, stronger man.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Prediction: Cotto TKO 11

Scott Levinson (Pro Boxing Fans): I’d sure like Cotto’s chances better if we were in 2006. If someone is going to beat Pacquiao in his current form, it’s going to take a fighter at his absolute peak. Cotto is a special talent, but a lot of tough fights, a monumental battering at the hands of Margarito, and his near-escape against Clottey suggest he is in decline. I will say this: if Pacquiao is minimally complacent in his approach to this bout, even a 90% Cotto is going to give him fits. And I might be taking a leap of faith on the size issue, as it could rear its head. I don’t think so.

I see a tense, high-energy fight where Pacquiao’s speed, movement, and newfound mastery of angles keep him out of serious trouble. A reasonably close fight breaks open around the seventh round, when Pacman starts to fully click, and open up his power game, forcing the referee or his corner to pull a gallant Cotto out around the tenth round.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Prediction: Pacquiao TKO 10

Nathan Nau (Pro Boxing Fans): There is no question that Cotto is the naturally bigger and stronger man in this bout, but he is clearly tailor made for Pacquiao. Pacquiao will use a combination of natural speed and power in both hands, crisp combinations and effective boxing technique to dispatch the challenger impressively.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Prediction: Pacquiao 4th round KO

Luke Jernigan (DFN Sports Network): I anticipate this being a one-sided bout with Pacquiao coming out looking to prove himself once again. With Floyd Mayweather active again, the pound for pound debate is rejuvenated and it’s Pac Man’s job to prove he is indeed #1 on boxing’s p4p list. Cotto will be overmatched but I expect to see him fight hard into the later rounds before a KO victory by Pacquiao in the 9th or 10th round.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Prediction: Pacquiao KO 9th or 10th round

Scott Dryden (Pro Fighting Fans): Miguel Cotto will bring power punches to the ring the likes Manny Pacquiao has never experienced. Freddie Roach stated he is very concerned not only with Cotto’s power but also his drive and determination as this is the biggest fight of his career. Cotto’s toughness can never be questioned but the combination of speed and power that Manny possesses is unmatched.

Pacquiao will have a difficult time with Cotto but will prevail via TKO in the 10th round. This sets the stage for one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport, Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. As a fan, I like everyone else want to see this fight happen but possibly even bigger than that would be HBO’s 24/7 with the verbal sparring between Roach and the Mayweather’s camp. A rare chance for the world of boxing to give its fans what they want, thus it probably won’t happen.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Prediction: Pacquiao TKO 10

Jake Emen (Pro Boxing Fans): In my full Pacquiao vs. Cotto prediction, I laid out a series of four questions that would hold the key to the fight. They were how the catch-weight would affect the fight, how each man would take the other’s punches and whether or not Cotto would be able to catch up with Pacquiao sufficiently. I answered them all in favor of Pacquiao. However, Cotto is no pushover especially for a smaller man, and I expect two banged up fighters to make it to the final bell.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Prediction: Pacquiao by decision

Final tally for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto picks from the staff: 5 for Pacquiao (4 by stoppage); 1 for Cotto (by stoppage)
